Woke up this morning and decided to fit my Cruise Control stalk that arrived yesterday while I was at the Rolling Road day (a bargain at £37!). Thought I'd write a littleaswell seeing how there's not one in the How-To's.
This applies to all mk5's that haven't already got Cruise Control. Some lower spec cars will also need the switch fitted to the clutch. Your Vauxhall garage can do this for you when you take it to be Tech 2'd.
Phillips screwdriver (medium sized)
Torx T20 Screwdriver
Cruise Control Indicator Stalk - part number 13129642
15 minutes to fit the stalk
However long it takes the guy to activate it on Tech 2
Turn the steering wheel a quarter turn left to expose the screw cap. Remove the grey cap and take out the phillips screw. Turn the wheel a quarter to the right and take out the other screw.
Take out the Torx T20 screw that goes up from the underside of the steering column (why on earth Vauxhall couldn't just use either all Torx or all Phillips is beyond me).
NOTE: IF YOU HAVE A REACH/RAKE ADJUSTABLE STEERING COLOUMN, PULL IT ALL THE WAY TOWARDS YOU, IT WILL MAKE THIS NEXT BIT EASIER.
Lift off the top cover, using the screwdriver to lever it off (I found it easier to do the 2 sides 1st, then the front).
Place a screwdriver in the small indent in the indicator stalk and lever the stalk out of the gap.
Then place the new stalk into the hole and press firmly on the end to seat it in right.
Place the covers back on the steering column and replace all screws. Sit an admire your handy work, get all giddy and press the buttons like a schoolkid.
Some cars may already have the cruise control activated, just needing the stalks. Just to be on the safe side, go to a road with either a 50mph or National speed limit and test it out. If the cruise control light doesn't come on (looks like the top picture on the end of the stalk) and the cruise doesn't work, take the car to your local Vauxhall dealers and ask them to activate it on Tech 2 (will cost in the region of £50).
The VXR needs to go onto the tech 2 now (hoping they can do it tomorrow). Then it's easy street on the motorways for me .
