    Mk 4 1.6 8V Rough running

    Hello,

I have a 52 plate Astra MK4 1.6 club auto. a few months ago my Emissions warning light started flickering and now stays on all the time. We are now haveing problems starting and initial rough running which I'm assuming is all related.

Right - I'm making an assumption that this is probably the dreading EGR valve problem but it could also be coil pack, fuel pump, fuel filter, dirty throttle body, coked-up cylinders etc. I haven't had any diagnostic checks run yet but I phoned Inchscape Vauxhall in Reading and asked them to quote for blanking the EGR and doing a software upgrade to bypass the fault code (assuming that is the problem) and they quoted £102 inc VAT.

Does anybody think this is a reasonable price and if not do they know anyone who can do the job for less (Reading area). I'd like to change the fuel pump and clean the throttle body but I don't know their location and how to go about it (sorry). Can anybody give me advice on this?

My dad used to clean coked up engines using Redex (pouring into cylinders) and then running the engine - does anybody advise doing this or should I avoid that stuff at all costs!!??!

    Thanks for any help

    Simon

I meant Fuel Filter! Hopefully the pump is fine!

Could be a lot of things

Do the things you are capable of first, check the EGR valve as you have said, its held on by 2 T40 torx bits, soak it in brake cleaner or WD40 til its spotless

Throttle body isnt too hard to clean, just make sure no grime or stuff goes into the inlet manifold

Try changing your spark plugs, I had the same problems, cleaned the TB etc etc all helped a bit but it was still missfiring and juddering, changed the plugs and problem solved. I would just give it a service first then if it persists get the coil pack checked. Also get the fault code sorted

Thanks Toms1986 - I'll do that this weekend. How do I get to the EGR on an 8v 1.6 petrol engine?

its bolted to the inlet manifold,so to gain access you need to remove the air intake from the throttle body..good luck

Unless you've a Z16SE, where the EGR is in plain view at the back of the engine ontop of the inlet manafold. The X16SZR needs the plenum removed.

You'd probs be better off (financially too) by just cleaning the throttle body, replacing the EGR and changing spark plugs.

The Z16SE which you have doesnt have a coil pack - just plain HT leads and DIS module

more than likely cause will be the EGR/plugs tho.

EGR about £40 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/17200272-VAUXH...QQcmdZViewItem - submit cheeky offer)
TB cleaned - £3 for a can or carb cleaner
    plugs - £10-£20

far cheaper than the cost of a diagnostic at vauxhall and then youd still need parts on top.

do all the above ur self - piece of piss.

Im wondering wher the throttle body would be located in a z16se??
My sisters having problems with her 53 plate astra 63k mileage, auto. It stalls when idleing. The diagnostic has come back with oxygen sensor but dont know if that plays a part in the car stalling. Hope some1 is able to shed some light.

Spark plugs were changed at 58k mileage. The egr valve was sealed so it was hard to clean it although wd40 was sprayed!
