Is a Panel Filter a bad idea?

    Right, just finished de-restricting and fitting a vectra pipe. . . .

First off, i noticed some people have theirs sticking right through a couple of inches. I couldnt get mine to sit like that, if i brought it forward it caught on the radiator, so i thought there was fine, nice and solid and its not sitting on anything.

Now, the last mod i was thinking of doing to the air intake was to fit a K&N panel filter. I heard people saying not to bother though.

Some people even said the oil used on it is bad for the engine and to steer well away?

Just wondering what everyone elses opinion was?

    just whack one in...

the ppl that moan about the oil aspect are those numpties that put shitloads of it on and wonder why it kills the AFM.

follow the instructions when it comes to the regualar oiling of aftermarket filters and youll be fine.

Stop worryin about it and get one fitted....

I always thought that, but it's a modern 'cyber myth' according to K&N - http://www.knfilters.com/MAF/massair.htm

So if it does fail, and you suspect the filter caused it, they be very happy to hear from you

Are there any performance filters which do not require oil?

So what's the deal with reduced engine life through using this type of filter? Can they allow more muck into the engine and therefore increase wear?

From what i understand (through what i have read only) it seems that the oil from the filter goes through the filter and ends up on the sensors etc clogging everything up, hurting the engine in the long run.

If u read the K&N link above then this would disprove this theory..... Personally Id get one and as I said earlier - follow the instructions re: oiling etc and youll be fine. If u dont want to, then stick in a fresh paper filter for a few quid and change it every 6months.

That's only when you re-oil it, reccomended once a year, just be careful to follow the instructions.

Anyway back to your original question, YES do it and put one in. What's the point of doing the veccy c mod to get more air in, if it is the restricted by the filter 7 the airbox.

Glad you got it sorted BTW, looks good.
