    astra estate questions

with my wife being in the family way im gonna have to sell my 3dr hatch
ive seen an astra estate that im interested in. i think its a 1.4 16v.
firstly what are these engines like? are they reliable? whats the mpg figures for it?
secondly is there anything i should look out for with the estates?
its that sivery blue mirage colour, im thinkin colour coded rub strips an skirts, lowered 30mm, put the 17" voodo's of my hatch onto it, tint the windows. would make a tidy big bus for the family!

same things apply with the estate as the hatches, however look out for broken rear springs, as they have a tendancy to snap off the top coil if they frequently carry full-ish loads and go over bumpy roads/speedhumps. easily replaced though

I loved my estate and I'd still be running it if I hadn't been out of work come MOT time plenty of parts fit off the other mk4's as the front end is identical, and not forgetting the seating setup is identical to a Vectra so the GSi Recaro's bolt straight in

Only thing I would be wary of is buying one with a 1.4 engine or a 1.7 DTi, as they're quite heavy wagons once loaded and the performance/fuel economy will take a dive with a low powered engine like that. Engine of choice IMO is the 2001-2002 2.0DTi (not the later 2.0DTi's which can't be remapped) and get it remapped to ~140bhp, either that or start saving for a transplant

that was partially the reason I kept mine, initially I had it as a company vehicle, however once that was no longer an issue I was looking at trading for a hatch, however the practicality of just opening the boot to let the dogs in/out, and the ease of lugging about tools and still having an ICE install, made the decision easy

TBH they're not a lot longer than the mk4 hatches - and certainly no longer than the coupe/saloon's... if anything they're easier to park as there's more windows to see out of

parking the estate is not a problem their not a very big car and has pete said there's good visibility out of the rear.

removing the roof rails is easy enough, you don't need to remove the whole roof lining you can just pull it slightly down where the
    10mm nuts are.

you need to remove the plastic interior b pillar covers but that's not hard to do.
the only problem is you will need new roof strips (from the windscreen to tailgate) these are found on vans without rails.

i gave my roof rails to a fella with a van, so i had his roof strips
there's also rubber inserts and plastic screws on the van roof capping the holes where the rails will mount, you need them too to block up the holes in your roof where your rails were mounted.
