Question A few questions from a newbie!

    Hello!

I have a couple of questions about my MK4 Astra (1.6 envoy)

    Question 1:

If its cold and I start the car, theres a rhythmic (its ticking at about 250-300 BPM) ticking/clicking noise from the driver side of the engine that is relative to the RPM of the engine but goes away after a short time/distance (40 seconds give or take)

The strangest thing about it is: If i start the car and it ticks, then i turn the car off and restart the engine, the ticking doesn't come back!

Also, if I turn the ignition to the point before the engine starts and let it sit there for about 10 seconds, it doesn't make the ticking noise, even when its cold!

Is this something to be worrying about? i'm supposed to drive to newcastle from surrey tomorrow!!!

It doesn't always happen, usually when its cold and it always goes after a short while. Any ideas??

    Question 2:

Which is more accurate? my TomTom 720 or my speedo on the dashboard?

It seems that the speedo thinks i'm going quicker than the TomTom does!

    Any help would be great!

    Thanks,

    Matt

Hi as the car got standard or bigger rims ? as this will throw the speedo out as the wheel/tyre size has to fed into the EPROM on the insturment panel ,
or if the instrument panel has been replaced from another car and the wheel/tyre size hasnt been altered to suit it will have the same afect ,
this can be checked by having TEC2 conected to your car at vauxhall dealer or a good independant garage

the car is unmodified with standard rims (steel ones)

ps: anyone got any ideas about my first question?

1st one sounds like tappets, has the car been stood for a while? If its tappete, its not a problem, and will cure itself eventually.

2nd one the tomtom will be more accurate but dont worry about getting your speedo calibrated, its set like that from factory and you can always drive 42 on your clock and no your not speedin in a 40

Hi ,there is no way of knowing if the speedo is the same as it left the factory,
Its not a case of getting the speedo recalibrated its the correct rolling radius entered into the EPROM , Speedo calibration is a diferant matter altogther even with the correct rolling radius enterd the speedo can still be out , but if its reading over then its so big deal ,
But it is upto the driver/owner of the vehicle to ensure the speedo is reading corectly its upto you if you want to spend the money or not
