Advice for buying a MK4 SRi Turbo

    Hello Strangers,

A LONG time since I have been on here. And there is a good reason for it too - im buying another astra!

I just need some help though. I am looking to buy a MK4 Astra Sri Turbo. But what problems should I be looking out for under the bonnet? Its got approx 40K on it, the cambelt / water pump should be changed then I know. But are there any niggly problems I should look for? Just dont want to buy something that has serious probs with it.
It will be my first turbo too, so take me as a complete virgin to it all.
    Help!

    Good to be back!

    Thanks
    Richie

    Welcome back!

Turbos can go anytime, commonly ~50k miles. About £500 for a new VXR one.
Air Flow Meters are weak, but easy to change and about £80 for the part.

That's all that really springs to mind, just the usual things tbh.

cheers lads - just a bit unsure on the whole turbo thing. I guess just look out for oil leaks etc etc as well then? Excited, but very cautious i think.

Yea, damn long time. Its just a 'Standard' Astra G 52 plate SRi Turbo with 40K on the clock. The only problem is apparently there isnt much service history with it. Like I said, if the cambelt / water pump hasnt been done I will get that done asap - but its just the others bits I am concerned about - inparticular the turbo - being a novice with turbos, im not sure what faults to look for.

so far I have a check list that says the following:

    Cambelt / Water Pump done?
Ticking noise from the Turbo when warm (not sure how true this is)
    Oil leaks from head
    Smokey or not

    and thats about it.

I don't know about a 'ticking' from the turbo?

I would check (apart from the usual things you would check on any second hand car)...

Oil leak from rocker cover gasket (although easily fixed but may be a good bargaining point)

Check for oil around the breather near the back of the head too - my mate just bought one and it was pressurising the crankcases (3 cracked pistons) and it was a nightmare to spot - the only 'hint' was the oil around the breathers

    Smoking, especially on boost

Fluttering sound (on lift-off at 2-3000rpm at ful throttle) could mean the original dump valve is knackered (this means new turbo) - if it's got an aftermarket dump valve with the spacer fitted, it might do this anyway, so no worries if it has

Can't think of anything else - you may get a ticking from the little thing attached to the back of the airbox, this is not really normal, but it isn't anything serious though, I just left mine.

Ticking noise would normally be more a sign of the water pump on it's way out iirc.

the turbo last about 50k I am told
on oil best to use 10w/40 on them vauxhall stuff is good an cheap so i do a oil change every 5k on my turbo

they are a cheap car to run

oil change less then £20 if you get trade club Diy with new Filter sump plug
brake set up is cheap to replace £70 all in Fronts
about the same for the rear's
a exhaust £300 for a nice Cat back system
