1.8 astra coupe info for newbie

hi guys in new to the site as im looking to buy an astra coupe i saw my mates today and was really impressed with how it looked and all that.

his is for sale for £3500 with 50k on the clock but ive seen lesser miles for just a few hundred more

what i would to know is how they ride cause at present i have a suzuki ignis sport that hard as hell and im looking for something a bit more comfortable.

also whats the mpg and performance like in the 1.8

and what to look out for when buying one?

im only 20 and cant get a quote on turbo.

ill be looking to spend 3800 maybe more if a nice one turns up

    thanks liam

    Hi welcome to the site.

just look for the usual, rust, service history, condition in and out and a must for any astra over or approaching 40k is belt and water pump replacement, if not had one get one straight away or if buying from a garage get them to change it and inc it n the price, very nice car the coupe, cumfy, good mpg and stylish

Welcome to the site mate. The 1.8 coupe is a good motor, i have one myself and love it to bits! Its not the quickest car in the world but it isnt slow eitehr if you know what i mean lol mpg isnt great to be honest lol but the price at the pumps doesnt help this! The ride is quite firm but comfortable imo!

When looking at one just look for the usual accident damage, service records etc...one thing to check is if the timing belt, auxillary belt and water pump have been done at the correct intervals! Every 4 years or every 40k.
This is vauxhall country...on a quiet night you can hear the fords rust!!!!!

well im not really interesting in going fast i tend to find it gets you in trouble =P

ok ill look out for the norm then. im looking for around 30mpg my dads got a ztt 190 thats 2.5v6 and he gets 28mpg in that so i would imagin the astra to be a little better.

I can't comment on standard suspension setup as I bought mine already fitted with 40mm springs but the ride was still very comfy with standard shocks.

Performance for a 1.8 issn't bad, never feels guttless on the motorway and doesn't run out of steam until doing err over 70 lol.

MPG if heavy footed is a bit shit, I get around 100 miles from £20 however taking it easy and 130 can easily be done even more if doing motorway miles.

Make sure it's got a service history, cambelt & water pump done at 40/80k
