    curses! i have a puddle!

    hi guys,

just discovered the rear footwell, behind the front seats is soaking wet. i have an astravan so no rear seats to speak of. it's a layer of sponge topped with carpet. i've been all around the back looking for a leak, down the sides, and checked all door seals, and it's not damp anywhere but the footwell. there are no water marks anywhere to show where it's getting in.

upon lifting the bonnet to see from that angle, i noticed that the windscreen rubber seal that overlaps the screen at the bottom had come away, more so on the drivers side. it is wettest on the carpet this side. both footwells are wet though. i've put the seal back in place, but i think i'm a bit hopeful to think this is where the water is coming from. any ideas on how to find the leak or do u think the seal was the problem? thanks.

    forgot to mention it's a 2001 plate.

m8 easy way to test the screen is take the scutle panel off and hose water test the area you think its cumin in from. you will be able to tell rather fast if its the bond thats failed.. if it is then its easy to fix. either back fill with bond or have glass removed and resealed.

cheers stu. just mopped up as much water as i could. to be honest it smells quite chemically. now the guy that owned it before me was a mobile valeter, there was quite a bit if water in the spare wheel compartment when i bought it, i mopped that up and it's never returned. i figured as he was a valeter water was always going to be spilled.

i've had the car for about 3-4weeks now, could the water under the carpet be standing water from his valeting? there does seem to be an old water trail from underneath the van bed, behind the seats, to the front carpet. i don't know how long water would stay standing for, surely it would evapourate after 3 or 4 weeks of me owning it and keeping it dry? but i guess it's possible it could be a major spillage on his part.

i've just soaked the van with the hose, and mother nature seems to be doing her part today too, and the part i've managed to mop up has stayed dryish. i can't dry out the carpet as it's like a sponge!

don't know whether to take it to the garage so they can check it over, or wait till a really dry spell, see if it drys, and soak it again. ah it's just like my old escort RS turbo! that leaked like a sieve!
