What is it about the Astra that makes it appealing.

This is my first post on this very informative site. I stumbled upon it whilst searching for a replacement back box for my coupe. I have worked in Vauxhall Ellesmere Port for 22yrs making the current model Astra, I was wondering what it is that all you folk find so appealing about the car. I have always had a Vauxhall as my dad worked at the same plant for 35 yrs so I thought it was only right to show a bit of loyalty. I can honestly say that all the variants I have owned none have given me any trouble. We have come a long way from the Viva and the plant has stayed open since 1962 so we must be doing something right. What are your thoughts on the current range as it slowly comes to the end of its life..
    Regards.

well for me its nice to have a car that although so common,it is like a blank canvas, and you can do so much to stamp your own style on it.

that and my family have always owned vaux's.

my first car memory was my mums 87 cavalier mk sri130, classic car,and apparently theres only abt 20 left on the road now

im a big fan of the mk4 shape, think i prefer it to the mk5. i guess a big draw for me was vaux reliability, low insurance group and bang for buck engine and equipment wise.

Reliable, cheap to run, cheap to fix, wide range of engines from 1.4 upto 400Bhp turbo monsters (if you have enough cash / motivation), absolutely shedloads of modding can be done! And of course they do a fat Astra with 7 seats for those of us who need the space

I know a few people might lynch me for saying this, but the Astra has almost become what the Escort used to be 20 years ago - a cheap runabout you can turn / tune into the car of your dreams.

Actively proving that post counts mean jack sh*t since 1971

Chuffing ada!!! they been workin on this new model for that long????? LOL!!! They still aint got it right!!!! I prefer my mk1, always have since they came out. TBH, they're one car that looks great from the rear but that front end has lost the plot to me.
    One of the few,,, Mk1'ers!!!!!

    i miss my 130 i had a nordic blue e reg hatch

where did you hear that there's only about 20 left?

TBH the cav was a good car mk1,2,3 but it never was as good as the astra's IMO.
ive had mk1 gte's, mk2 sri, mk3 sri, and a few basic models mk1,2,3,4 and will no doubt own a mk5.
ive only driven 1 mk5, 07 sxi iirc and i thought it was a good little car

Well you're doing better than the luton plant atleast.

I think its nice to have a less common model of a very common car, also like the clean simple look of the Mk4 (and 3). Also like the reliability and the fact theres a VX dealer at the end of my road, and vauxhalls are a bit of a thing as my dad worked in the luton plant for 30odd years, soits a bit of a habit more than anything.

I hope your dad is doing OK it was a sad day. I work with some lads who relocated up to our plant,it must have been a major upheaval for them.We lost a third of the workforce a couple of yrs back. Its a competitive market and we seem to be under a constant threat.

Its just a generally nice car, it's got really nice lines to it, even if it's common you can still make it stand out easily.
And because it's vauxhall you get all the usual qualities, but really, it is just a really nice, and comfortable car.

I'm on my third Astra, fourth Vauxhall. Can't see me driving anything except an Astra to be honest, and I've driven a lot of other cars.

They're the Ronseal of the car industry - they do exactly what they say on the tin.
