    Noisy Tick Over

My car has developed a rather horrible sounding tapping tickover. When at standstill, engine on idle the engine sounds like an old fiesta. Been told its probably the hydrolic lifters. Anyone else have/had this problem, and how much would it cost to put right?

Its a MK4 1.8 16v (X18XE1). Cant be related to oil, as its had new oil and filter and timing belt change done. The ticking engine sound has been progressively getting worse for a while now, theres no loss in power, or any other fluids, engines done 94500 miles now.

Still worth checking the oil level tho.

Water pump, timing belt, oil and filter all done over the weekend. Checked the oil level again this morning, and again after work, and the levels fine. Mechanic seems to think its the hydrolic lifters but says would have to strip engine down for further diagnostic. I always change oil every 5000-6000 miles, the engine doesnt seem to drink any oil, and no oil stains on the drive so not leaking either.

    Not leak oil, burn it.

You've answered your own question then. Plus a mechanic has already diagnosed the problem.

Would it be a case of replacing or repairing the hydrolic lifters? and how much is this likely to cost? Thanks for all the help so far guys
