    Rough prices.....

Just picked up a 2000 Astra 1.7 DTi

Iv been trawling the forum for common faults to be aware of and so far iv gathered that:

Oil/sludge in expansion tank is the most common fault, but is it due to the oil cooler or the Head Gasket?

Fuel pump ECU goes but "refurb" ones are around the £250 mark

Maf sensor and Crankshaft sensor are also common faults...

What sort of price would a new head gasket/skim cost?

How will i know when it has "gone" completely, Iv read that flushing the coolant every 6months is a good idea and using decent antifreeze will help.

Any other faults that i should be aware of?

When i test drove it, i noticed it to need some revs to get going in 1st but have read its common, but it did sound abit more "diesel" like, than ones iv had before, (2 PD130's and a 2.0 TDCI) is it usual for them to sound abit "tractorish"

Sorry for the long post, just trying to get my head around everything

    Cheers in advance

i think you have most things covered there mate,as for prices on reskim's not sure,
they are slow off the mark until turbo kick's in but you can keep the revs up to improve your pulling away pace,
i had a 1.7 dti with oily coolant i just kept cleaning the sludge off the top of the coolant and changed it twice a year
good car just not very quick off the mark, great on motorway run's and very mpg around town.

thats all i needed really, cheap to run/insure.

having come from a 185bhp tdi Ibiza then to a 180bhp Passat TDI, the 75bhp in the Astra is far from fast!

Stick with that interval and you'll see 300k no problems.
