Try this its very good and open source (free)

VLC - the cross-platform media player and streaming server

VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

First of all, download GSpot [Which needs WinRar]
( http://www.headbands.com/gspot/GSpot252b01.rar ) Then run it and select the .avi file to see which codec it needs. I'd recommend downloading a codec pack, e.g K-Lite Codec pack. It has absolutely everything you'd ever need Plus its tested as virus-free - http://ftp.freenet.de/pub/filepilot/...lcodec375f.exe

(Installed it myself yesterday with a fresh copy of XP)

    That'll get you going

    Peace out o/

if you want to keep using the crock of sh*t Microsoft supply, then download a newer version of WMP. Alternatively if you want a player that will handle every file type you throw at it, then try Total Video Player (also comes with Total Video Convertor). Completely free to download, and I've not yet found a file type it can't either play or convert to another file type
    NOW - Sapphire Black 3dr Astra G

    THEN - Glacier White 2.0Di Estate - 136bhp 1.6 Pineapple Yellow Mk3 - Flame Red 2.0Di Van - Chianti Red 1.8 Coupe - Star Silver 2.2 Zafira - Flame Red 2.2 Linea Rossa Coupe - Titan Gold 1.8 Coupe

You can download Total Video Player here:

    http://www.download.com/Total-Video-...-10552696.html

Although the VLC player I put a link to at the top is better. On Download.com TVP has 3 1/2 stars out of 5 and VLC has 4 1/2 out of 5 but what worries me about TVP is they reckon its a bitch to uninstall as even after an uninstall it leaves quite a lot of registry entries behind.

i've never had a problem with TVP/TVC, but it does the same thing as VLC so either will do the job for you. You could also download the avi codec for WMP10 if you so wished, the Microsoft site will have it on there
