I got an ELM323 USB one, use it with Digimoto. Tis quite good imo

Reading codes is just one of the things the software does... you can read live data from the engine too (lambda, injectors, temp sensors, etc.)

For £30-40, I would recommend having one.

Digimoto? is that the name of the software?

Mine arrived in the post today, but there seems to be a communication problem between the reader and the ecu...

( yes it IS plugged in)

Yeah, Digimoto is the software. There are various free OBDII programs you can get, but I like the interface of Digimoto, so use that.

What error message are you getting (if any)

Got the engine light and airbag light on.

Got a code reader and Opel Tech software (allegedly) but it won't connect...
Something about communications could not be opened.

(Was a few hours ago now, bloody laptop is a Dell and the battery is dead and won't charge, so I had to run an extension lead into the car and boot up cold)

    Is Digimoto freeware then?

Did you have the ignition on? I'm not sure, but I think you need the ignition on (engine not running) to connect.

There is a free version, yeah - google for Digimoto Lite.

However, it sounds like the version you have is the Opel-Tech 2 with the Hungarian software. I've had one of these myself, and the software is (to be polite) somewhat rubbish...

It can read codes (so long as you can speak Hungarian ) and reset an EML / emissions light, but that's pretty much the extent of it's usefulness. The people who wrote the software never bothered finishing it! I'm not sure it could successfully reset your airbag light, that section of the software didn't seem to be complete when I last tried it.

To get it to work on your laptop, you'll need to make sure the software is set to use the com port your interface is on, usually COM 1 or 2.

If it still won't work, pop over to Northampton... I can reset your engine light. Not sure about the airbag light tho.

Could well be the hungarian version, I did see a vast choice of languages on the settings screen:
    1 . English
    2 . Hungarian
3 . erm, that was it.

I'll get hold of the digimoto lite and see what it does and if it's wothwhile upgrading to the full version.

Good point. Ignition with dashlights on? or off completely?

What position should the key be in when attempting to read?

Cheers for the invite, engine light is what concerns me most, as I'm burning a lot of fuel and would like to know why.

Airbag is just cos I've changed the front seats from standard.
