    Unhappy AUTOMATIC question...

    Hi guys,

not too sure if this comes under electrical but here i go anyway...

My mum just bought a 2000 astra 1.6 AUTOMATIC

She says sometimes she cant change gear from PARK to DRIVE or sometimes she cant put it into PARK but only sometimes. she says theres a clicking noise behind the dash when she tries to do this? ive not witnessed the problem myself as she only bought it yesturday and ive not had time to even see it.

    Any ideas guys? much appriciated!

I'm sure the auto's have a solonide that operates when you press the brake to allow it to go out of park, it could be this is faulty or maybe the brake switch. It wouldn't explain not being able to put it back into park though

Sometimes if you try to go into park too quickly it wont let you do it. You also need to make sure that the brake pedal is properly depressed as without that it wont allow you to select park.

The click in the dash is the ignition relay.
There are 2 relays/soladoids in the circuit.
Dash handeles ignition - when in anything but park and neutral this locks the ignition preventing startup.
The one under the selector is the solonoid that allows you to change gear. and is released by the brake
Have a look in the haynes manual, you know that big book your mum should have brought as soon as she got the car , don't tell me she forgot to buy one because its explained in there.
Chapter 7B of the hayne manual describes your problem. They sudjest its a problem with the selector cable adjustment.

Reminds me of the women in bristol who left her astra unlocked because the transmitter battery ran out and didn't know you could lock cars by putting the key in the door.
