Astra G whining, sounds like a motor whine

Can anyone help, my Astra MK4 1.6 8V club has decided to start whining when the engine is running. It sounds like a motor whine, possibly power steering, but it doesn't change sound when you turn the wheel, it does change with the revs though.

Is there any way of checking the power steering fluid easily? or does anyone know of any other possible faults?

    Cheers

Mine does it too, and it's the same engine, and I have recently had the belt changed, would the mechanic pick up it was the rollers?

Just spoken to a vauxhall mechanic who said straight away when he heard the sound that it was the alternator.

Now trying to find one at a reasonable price

blocks! mines doing this too. i think i will get a bigger alternator, might as well, considering my car will have two 1000w rms subs and a 3000w amp.

    will the 2.0l model alternators fit a 1.6 8v?

the sounds a little dodgey when the engine is revved but does the sound simmilar to the sound in this video i've taken of mine as i have the same problem.

    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=b1iMs5cNGdI

I've tried taking the aux belt off and run the car and the sound goes, i've changed the aux belt tensioner too and so the only other thing that is around there that the belt runs is the alternator. Thats the conclusion i've come too via the powers of deduction.
