ph1 vs ph2 front end differences

probably been covered, but despite looking I can't see what I'm looking for

what is/are the difference(s) between the ph1 & ph2 ront ends for the ph2 to be able to get the 'V' grill? I've been looking at two N reg cars, and one's wearing a ph2 V Grill (is all standard bodywork etc) and the other is wearing a ph1 smoothed GSi grill (non V-grille type).

now I understand from reading bits & pieces that the ph2 grilles won't simply swap onto the ph1's (and vice-versa) so what is the reason for this? is it something simple like the headlights being different sizes? or is there something more major like bonnet/bumper being different shapes?

cheers for any help guys & gals

ph1 & 2's have different shaped headlights - hence the grill not being directly interchangeable

As Ffeog said, the headlights are different. Except on the GSi;s, P2 GSi;s have P1 headlights to accomodate the GSi grille.

    i second this

i bought a gsi grill from a scrappy (very cheap and it was the right colour) but it didnt fit, i took it back, and the very helpful bloke said that it was a phase 2 gsi grill, he said i would need 2 change the lights to get it 2 fit, and guess what he only had one at the time, very annoyin, so luckily he gave me my money back

i was gunna get a badgless grill with the mesh but these can only be got these days for the phase 2, also annoyin, look the nuts imo

couldnt be assed with changing the lights so i opted to save for a new car

twisted logic there - can't be bothered to pick up a 2nd hand set of lights for £25-£30, so he saves up however many hundreds/thousands to get a completely different car instead

I guess you did actually change the lights when you think about it. its just there was a few other bits attatched to them when you picked them up

    Sorry but they don't.
Phase2 GSi have phase 1 lights and phase 1 GSI grill.
The only phase 2 grille available is from South Africa, and cost loads to import.

You might have got very lucky and got the grille of the South African car, that had been imported.

When the P2 GSi;s were built, they came off the production lines as a standard sport with P2 lights, they then went ot be converted to GSi;s where upon the they had the P1 lights and grille fitted. All GSi grilles come without headlight washers on them, they have to be drilled to have them fitted, the 1.8 P1 Gsi;s also came without them.
