Going to look at an astra tomorrow - advice please

I am going to look at a 51 plate astra 1.8 sport. Its done 74k miles and is owned by a employee of the local vauxhall dealer. Now he says its just had a service and a cambelt change but I have a few reasons not to 100% trust this person (I know him in a round about way).

Is there any way I can check the above to make sure it has had the work done? He says he can give me an invoice from the dealership to prove the work has been done, however he is a mechanic for them so 1. would he have an invoice (or woul dit be done on the sly) and 2. Could the invoice be made up IE a dummy invoice?

Lastly anything I should really be looking out for on the car

    Cheers for any gen

best way to really check would be to take a couple of tools with you and open the cam cover. it shouldnt take more than 5-10 mins and worth the check. the belt should still look very new! also while your there check the air filter/oil/rad water etc.

Pop the top timing belt cover off and look if the belt appears new, 3 small torx bolts hold it on, size will be coming shortly, also pop the air filter out and see how clean it is, if dirty the 'recent service' was probably an oil and filter change

i think you need to take the air box out to take the cam cover off
your need a small tool kit with some torx bits in thats about it
    an a few small sockets

also ask the dealers if the work is in the system or did he do it DIY

you getting another Astra Mat?! don't you think you should get M1GST on the road first

as has been said really, check the colour of the oil, also pop the top of the airbox off to check the filter, and undo the belt cover to check the age of the belt. not much else you can do without undoing each individual spark plug/removing the glovebox to check the pollen filter/removing the oil & fuel filters...

oh and yes he could make up a dummy invoice if he so wished (or at least he could get someone else to do it)...

does he know that you know him though? if he does, then you may find he goes against (what I can only suppose to be) the grain and actually levels with you...

why don't you ring the dealers where he works? if he's a mech he won'tbe answering the phones, so explain to the receptionist you're looking at a car but want to check the history, please can they confirm what work they have done on it. you'll need the reg plate though for that one.

yeah he knows who I am - but I know more about him and I know he would sell his mom given half the chance. However the car is at a good price.

Can anyone confirm I need to take the airbox off etc?

I had to remove airbox to take my cam cover off on Zlet, would imagine the 1.8 would be pretty similar space wise.
