Question Running problems at certain revs

    Morning all

    I've got a 2001 Astra mk4 1.4 16v, and I'm getting a few problems it

Recently the car Has been back firing a lot more than usual and jolting and jerking a lot and juddering at high engine speeds

It only does it between 2.5k-3k RPM, at low speeds ( still at 2.5-3k RPM ) the jolting and jerking is pretty violent and it throws you about almost, and at higher speeds ( still same RPM ), it judders and splutters.

I did a service not so long ago, Bosch Quad cores sparks, they're all in good and the gap size is ok, air filter element cleaned it and de-restricted it, oil and oil filter

I also cleaned the Throttle body butterfly, so it was spotless, it did make a difference

Also When I've given the car a good run in, for about an hour or so, so they engine is warmed up good, when I come to start it, It takes a good 6 or 7 turns for the engine to get going.

The engine management light has been showing, But this has been on for over 40k miles since my sister originally bought the car, and these problems have only started showing now

    It has done 103k Miles.

Does anyone know what this could be?

OK I expect 2 things to be wrong.

    1. Your CAT has failed. As such your ECU is trying to compensate the air/fuel ratio to make the emmissions fall within tolerances. As a result you may feel your car overfueling/underfueling which will bring symptoms of irratic idle/jerkyness. This will also make the engine management light come on as the emmissions do not fall within tolerances.

    2. The coolant temperature sensor maybe up the duff. (Common problems on 1.6 16v Z16XE engines). Luckily £10 will put that right.

    Hope this helps

    Buggery

Thought It might have been something serious

It has been drinking a fair bit of fuel aswell! I get about 166 miles out of half a tank, and thats taking my time, not taking it above 3k Rpm

i'll try doing other things first, like cleaning the EGR valve, then I'll take it to tech2 to get some codes, how much would a diagnostics check cost?

    Hmm

I've just come back from college, a good 20 minute drive, and pulled up on my drive

I noticed that the Eggy acrid smell wasnt there...

The stuttering is slowly getting worse and worse

I'm going to D/C the battery and remove the EGR valve, see what kind of a state thats in, I'll keep this updated

    Well I've reseted the ECU

Engine management light is gone But It'll come back on within the next 40 or so miles like It usually does

The coil pack hasn't been changed by the looks of things since the car came out of the factory

Can get them on trade for £18, may well be worth the try
