    Thermostat knackered?

    Evening all

    I Have a query about my astra 1.4 16v mk4

My car temp gauge takes for ever to go up, around about 20 minutes to start going up, and once it reaches 90ish degrees when doing slow speeds like 20-30mph, If I do anything more than 50 mph or dual carriageway speeds, the temp drops right off the scale again, as though its just started like

And then when I start doing slow speeds it goes right back up to 90 degrees within about 30-40 seconds

Does this sound like a knackered thermostat?

Any help would be Greatly appreciated

Yes, very common "fault" for the thermostat to go.

If you want to check, start car from cold and feel hose going to radiator. It should stay cold for a long time then suddenly get very hot. If it gets hot quickly from starting the thermostat is faulty.

costs around £30 to replace, plus you have to top up coolant afterwards
