Just make sure the clay is lubricated properly, i.e. plenty, and keep kneeing (sp) the clay to get a clean side. Oh, and make sure the clays kept warm, not cold as it goes hard when cold and not good I tell thee!

It depends on the type of clay used. Some are less harsh than others. I think it is sonus grey that is quite harsh and would leave marring on the body work. It is used as it is very good at getting rid of contaminents prior to machine polishing.
I have used meguiars clay and sonus green and had no issues. Just make sure you have the car clean so there is no dirt which will stick to the clay for you to drag around to leave scratches. And dont drop it on the floor!

What clay did you buy? Sonus? Clean your car own brand?

Sonus green is very mild, sonus grey however is quite harsh and will leave marks

green, good! use about 1/3 of the bar, warm it your hands and keep kneading it to keep it supple, use lots of lube (I wash the car, rinse then get a fresh warm wash solution AND the clay lube and use both, you don't need to press hard, jsut use even pressure, keep turning the clay to a clean side. Start at the top, and work down. If you drop the clay or it becomes really dirty. Throw it and get a new bit of clay.

Follow that little lot and you should be ok!

Cheers, oh and you can't avoid swirls, just prolong their appearence. Claying will actually help show them up!

From reading alot of reviews on the sonus green I've heard its really good stuff and there is minimal chance of it damaging the paintwork. I've actually got some on order at the moment too.

As others have said though just keep it well lubed to stop it sticking and scratching the paint and keep kneading it to a clean part so your not dragging contaminents across the body and you'll be fine.
