mk4 astra deisel buying advice please!

were thinking of adding another astra to our household ( a 4 door this time) with the missus being in the family way. i was wondering which one is the best to go for? 2.0 or 1.7? i have a few questions
    1. how much does each cost to tax for a year?
    2. what are the mpg figures for both?
    3. roughly what insurance groups are they?
    4. which one is the most reliable?
is the 1.7 really as slow as people say? i will have to drive it sometimes and theres an outside chance it may replace my own so i dont want anything too slow!
its this or a picasso ( damned ugly car) bye bye ka tho!

For a family hack the 1.7 would do a good enough job. Good on fuel and cheap to run. The 2.0 is a fair bit better to drive, plenty more pull but they are generally more rare than the 1.7 so finding a decent one might be more of a chore.

It's worth having a look on www.parkers.co.uk - if you go to reviews/ facts and figures you will get plenty of info.

1.7DTi is pretty crap. The 2.0DTi is about as fast (slow) as a 1.6 16v. I got a solid 42mpg out of my 2.0DTi round the town which was about 420 miles to a tank.

1.7DTi is probably the more reliable. The 1.7 has the leaky oil cooler and a timing belt, the 2.0 has the dodgy pumps and dodgier turbos, plus they tend to eat front wheel bearings.

Though, the 2.0 has ABS, discs all round, and a sweeter gearbox.

I had my 2.0DTi for over 2 years and did just over 30k in it, and had to do nothing to it in that time other than wearing parts (rear discs at 60k, front discs at 35k).

Depending on the money, you could try to find a late Mk4 with the 1.7CDTi, bit more power in those and you get the ABS as well.
