how can i power my 7" tv in the car

ive bought a 7" tv but it didn't come with the dc 12v car cord.
can i cut the plug off the ac adaptor and use that to wire up to live and earth in the car?
i would buy a new dc adaptor but I'm not sure which one to get plus i didn't really want to use the cigarette lighter socket to power the tv.

any help with this would be greatly appreciated as I'm useless with electrics and i don't want to blow the tv up

Providing the input to the TV is 12v then yes, what does the transformer on the AC adapter say? 12V?

If it is 12V then don't forget to wire in an inline fuse.

on the AC adaptor it says output dc 12v=900 mA
    input 240v-50Hz 120mA
so the AC adaptor converts the power to dc 12v then?
the wires on the AC adaptor are black and black with white stripe. would the black with the white stripe be live?
    thanks for the help

If you go to Maplins you can get various power adapters with different voltages etc.

Yes you will be fine, I did something similar.

You need to know from either the adapter or the TV whether the center pin is +ve or -ve. then do a check with a continuity tester / multimeter to check which wire is which.

again don't forget the inline fuse.

The black solid is live, and black striped is earth. i found that with a few male and female spade connectors and some cable i could wire the TV up to the glove box light, i also run my ps2 off this.

Not all wiring colours are the same so you can't assume that because it was like that on your screen Nathan it will be the same here

pecky has given the answer above as the only safe way to work it out

thanks for the help all ill try and get hold of a multimeter.
there's a battery pack that plugs in to the tv and it takes 10 AA batteries. the wires that go from the pack to the tv are black and black/white.
the black go's to earth and black/white go's to live. i thought they would have been the same on the adaptor but I'm not taking the chance
