    New Engine

Hi i have got an Astra mk4 1.6 sxi on a 2002 plate i have been told that a valve or the piston ring has gone on it and it will cost me between 800 and a 1000 pounds to fix the problem. Can anyone suggest what the best option is as i don't know weather to replace the parts and pay the huge bill or to get a reconditioned engine. could i have some advice about all the pros and cons. Cheers

do a test to determine whether its a valve or piston ring first..you,ll need compression gauge and some oil.remove plugs and leads and do a compression test on all 4 pots.. then one at a time pour a small amount of oil thru the plug holes and retest compressions..
as you,ve been told you have a faulty cylinder one of them should have a low compression reading but this will go UP noticably with some oil in IF it is worn/broken rings, but make no difference if a valve is shot..
IF it is only a valve then the repairs should not be as expensive
