    Shocking Fuel Consumption?

    Hi all,

I bought my 99 W Plate 1.6 16v astra a couple of months ago and have become obsessed with how much fuel it consumes. I've worked out its doing 20 miles to the gallon. Admittedly its shortish city journey's, but even still, 20 mpg seems very poor to me.

    Is it about right?

Yep, small engine and big car means crap fuel economy. If you want good fuel ecomony in an Astra, then you need the 1.6 8v or the 1.7DTi. All the rest are pretty rubbish. Even my 2.0DTi only gets 49mpg doing purely motorway miles (about the same as the 1.6 8v). The 1.7DTi will pull over 50mpg in the city if driven correctly and heading towards 70mpg on the motorway.

Thing is, i had a 2.0 vectra a few years back and even that was better than this car.

Its probably heightened by it now costing a quid for a friggin litre of petrol, but still...

20mpg seems very low, it shouldn't really drop below the 30's on a 1.6. It didn't on mine.

The worst I ever had was 26mpg, I had rather heavy foot.. But now I drive "correctly" and get 38mpg.

    20mpg is way too low

my ex wife has a 97 1.6 16v Astra which does average 31mpg and the girlfrien has a 97 1.6 16v Astra which does average 43mpg. I have driven both cars and get these figures so you can count out driver changes. Some cars use a lot more than others. There is always a bad one in every bunch
