Tempted to buy Zafira cheap w/ ECU problem...

    Hello Fellows:

Am a newbie here, tempted to buy a 2002 Zafira 1.8xe Engine automatic transmission version with only 30k miles on it. The owner is selling it cheap at approx USD 5,000.00 bec the engine refuses to rev above idle speed. Its as if the throttle pedal is disconnected from the engine. The local Opel/Chevy dealer says this is probably an ECU problem that will cost USD 1,250 to fix! Has anyone else seen the same symptoms with other probable causes?

Is there a reputable source of remanufactured ECU's? What price?

I love the car but terrified by some postings of difficult to fix electrical system and steering pump/rack repair costs, troubles etc.

    Thanks in advance..

hi mate not sure if the 1.8 is fly by wire or not if it is it could be the pedal or wireing to or from it or the stepper motor on the throttle body itself,if it is the ecu i pretty sure the ecu is cheap to buy but and its a big but you will have to get it programmed to your car as they come vertually blank and the main dealer is the only person that can do this as it has to have updates from vauxhall etc and also holds the ebgine immobvilisor codes so dont be tempted to just buy a 2nd hand 1 off e bay unless you get a ecu from a zafira 1.8 auto and has the transponder and reader with it

Hello gsi-jay: Tks for your comments. I gave upthe idea of buying the zaf with a engine problem and will look at another unit tommorrow. On that one the traction indicator lit up after a few minutes of driving on dry but bumpy road. Is this normal?

What is typical price of a used ECU? Pls clarify, is the transponder and reader a separate component that is in the car of a diagnostic tool?
