"Temporary" vacancies that are several years duration

OK so following on from one of my previous threads

    http://www.astraownersclub.com/vb/sh...d.php?t=122362

I've applied today for another job...

    http://www.norfolkccjobs.com/details.asp?id=4052

now its more than double my current wage, and its a big step up the career ladder, but after chatting with the woman who's (hopefully) going to be my boss on the phone for 40 minutes today when I only rang up for an application form, I'd like to think I've got a decent chance at it..

now the thing that makes me think twice, is the post duration. Its a "temporary" vacancy, but its a 3 year post. Now in my mind temporary conjours up contracts being a matter of weeks, not years. I'm now getting second thoughts on going through with it in case I get 3 years down the line when the contract's up, and find myself out on my ear job-hunting again.

does anyone have any experience of these sort of "temporary" posts? whats likely to happen after 3 years? the woman wasn't sure on the phone, she said that the lottery funding was for 3 yrs. so does that mean if the project can be made to be sustainable the role will be made permanent?

any thoughts what might be the next step up the employment ladder AFTER the above role too? I'm not sure there's much career progression being a project manager for Adult Social Services, especially as its a niche post (food and fitness)... but I'm open to being proved wrong

It's quite common for councils to have posts like this as it's how their budgets work. If the project is succesful it's possiable they'd re-apply for the funding so the position could carry on. Hope that makes some sense.

As above it's a short term funded post contract.

LA's set posts up like this because they need to hit a target that the central gov has put on them.

    The usual scenario goes...

The Gov degree that councils need to increase/reduce a certain whatever within 3 years
The council sets up a project, and gets full or part funding from somewhere
They employ someone for that term to run the project
After 3 years they hit the target and the Gov is happy.
The project folds and everything returns to normal.

Don't let that put you off, as thy are a good way to get into the industry

thats about the long and the short of what I thought, but where do you think I go from there? only way up I can think of is to set up my own business educating businesses within the sports and leisure indstry to cope with clients who have learning difficulties...

...then again, I guess there's quite a bit of scope in that as I don't know of any company that currently does it

But you will have had experience of working for the local council, and other roles will keep cropping up that could be suitable for you.

Project managment experience as well as your sports experinence means that you could be employed in alot of different roles mate.

Chin up, apply and take it from there! You will only regret it if you don't

Pete - promoting and engaging the public in healthy lifestyles is high on the govs agenda at the mo, and for the foreseeable future. Even my work includes it.

as one project ends you can bet another similar one will start up under a different name - look at YTS, YOP, New Deal: they all did a very similar thing and ran pretty much consecutively.

That job you were looing at is a great way into LA/NGO work, and if you can set up a project, manage it and see it through to a successful completion, then that is gonna be a superb thing for your CV

i never thought of it like that guys

could be a way out of the fitness industry with any luck - I've got to the stage where I can't progress any further working within a gym/leisure centre/similar unless I set up on my own, so this could be the break I need

I'd go for it, not only will it be good experience, you'll get to work with and see how LA's and NGO's work which can be very helpful if you ever get a job outside of it all and need to deal with them as you can forsee what will happen which will always be helpful.

Not to mention that once you're in there'll be plenty of opportunities you'll find about for the future. If she was willing to spend 40 minutes on the blower talking to you's a good sign, they don't normally even pick up
