astra G 1.6 over reving prob

A friend has a astra G on a T plate. Its a 1.6 petrol and alot of the time now when u push the clutch down to change gear the engine starts reving really high untill you release the clutch.have oiled up all around the accelerator cable where it goes near the inlet manafold but it still persists.

Any other ideas to whats causing it and how to rectify the problem ?

    Many thanks.....steve

Does the engine race if u step off the accelerator....

in which case its very likely to be the ICV (Idle Control Valve) the symptoms can often be cured by cleaning it with carb cleaner (whilst ur at it - clean the throttle body and EGR valve - see How-To's in tech section for details) but more often than not a replacement ICV is required.... no major heartache tho as they only take a couple of mins to replace and can be sourced quite cheaply.

Now seeing as its on a T plate it'll either be the 8v X16SZR or 16v X16XEL engine. The relevant part numbers for each part are:
    8valve : 17112031 http://search-desc.ebay.co.uk/search...trypage=search
    16 valve: 17113196 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BRAND-NEW-Vaux...QQcmdZViewItem
