http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ should do that, unless you mean mixing like in a club then you'd need virtual dj or tractor something like that

Audacity is good program, make sure you download the LAME v3.96 file so you can save in MP3 format (unless this is included in the download with later versions of audacity)

Not the best program to use for mixing tracks, but handy for taking samples of songs to use for ringtones etc, and you can change the bitrate of MP3's, and record from loads of sources inc the internet.

v3.96 is a seperate downloadable patch from what I saw, will have to get that methinks. i have just downloaded it from the link above

can anyone tell me would audacity be appropriate for what I have in min, or should I not bother wasting HDD space installing it...

I want to basically take an accapella track I have here, tinker with the tempo of it (different tempos at different points) and overlay it onto an instrumental I have of an entirely different track... would this be possible if the two files I have are both in mp3 format..? or would I need something more advanced..? any suggestions?

You should be able to do that I think Pete, but something like virtual DJ may be an easier option.

V3.96 will be needed if you want to save files in MP3 format, it is available for free though

LAME V3.97 download - looks like they have updated it to 3.97

Should be spot on for that Audiocity is easy to use when you get the hang of it.

Virtual DJ costs money so I'd give audiocity a go. although you cna get a free trial of it.
