    Speed Camera Q

    Hi,

Just a quick Q about the standard gatso camera's that are basically everywhere as pictured below

Can these cameras operate whilst facing you?

I was under the impression that all the camera's judge the distance after you pass them using the white markings for a start and end time - and then take your photo of your car rear (oor eer!)

On sunday we were driving towards one of these camera's which was facing me on the other side of the road - and whilst there was no cars going in the cameras direction - it flashed me as i approached it.

Obviously we didn't have time to say cheese - the missus gave me a boll@*** for maybe doing 32 in a 30, but I have assured her that the camera cannot operate in this manor? and it was flashing for the fun of it...

    Am I right?

they work on radar, or crush strips in the road, the painted lines are just there for a 2nd check from the two photos.

They are only type approved for a rear image. so driving at them shouldn't cause you any problems.

Same as above ^^ theyre only designed to take pictures of the back of your car ... apperently due to the nature of the flash.. apparently!

However, i found this http://www.speedcamerasuk.com/gatso.htm you mind find it some help.

I also spoke to my traffic friends and there is a myth that a camera will self test a) to make sure it works and b) to show the not so rulely motorist it works! kinda prevention is better than a cure senario.

Anyway - you should be fine...except the bashing from the, harsh!

retro fitting cruse is great for speed camera controlled 30/40 limits. I find it a godsend in motorway roadworks late at night where it's easy to creep up with the speed.

Yeah I might look into that

The guides seems easy, but I am just a bit wary of fiddling with a car still under manufac warranty...

Another funny related fact is that my dad got a letter this morning of the old bill, 35 in a 30...first speeding ticket in 40 years of driving - ex lorry driver too.

    Made me chuckle

I thought they gave you 10% + 2? Or is this just a myth? If not then 35 in a 30 shouldnt give you a fine.

Speeding allowances vary from region to region

Some forces opperate a zero tollerance policy (quite literally) worst one I know of is north wales, with brunstrom 'lets legalise drugs but motorists are as bad as rapists'

    This applies in Hull

In Hull area this 10% +2mph is the rule but will still land you in trouble.

I got caught doing 46 in a 40 (10% +2mph). Because it was on the 'Guideline' I was offered the chance to attend a speeding seminar.
This cost me £55 but I didn't incur any points on my license.
Whilst there, a few people knew of others who got caught by the exact same speed camera at 10% +3mph and got the fixed penalty plus 3 points. No offer of seminar.
Plus on the day I got a sticker, keyring and up-to-date highway code book!!
