Unhappy Any idea what this is?

    Hi Guys,
My work car has started making a dodgy noise. Sounds like something wrong in the piston nearest drivers side.
Have a listen, what do you reckon?

    Any help greatly appreciated!

    Its a 1.6 mk4 estate

The noise seems to happen when throttle increases but disappears with higher revs. Not noticable really at idle.

Timing belt is only 15k miles old but its definitly from that side of the engine.

Plug looks good, can't see anything obvious with exhaust manifold... hope it isn't something too bad!

    Thanks!

Take the heat shield off and check the exhaust for blowing around the manifold, and the down pipe joint or broken manifold stud. It could also be a crakced manifold... Also check the spark plugs are fitted correctly

If its not of there, then maybe the water pump is goosed or on its way out as I am sure someone else had similar symtoms

    Hi,

Thanks for the help so far! I took off the heat shield and had someone rev the engine. I can feel a blow from the joint between pipe and flange of the downpipe just below the manifold.
It seems the seal here has failed and i imagine this is the problem. Fingers crossed i'm right cos i have ordered a new front section which has the cat in it too.
I'll keep you all posted when it arrives.

Where is the best place to get a new heatshield as the holes on mine have rusted away? Only one left holding the shield on at all!
