    its a chain mate.

i phoned vauxhall and they said it doesnt need to be changed for the life of the engine!

if it has snapped then phone vauxhall and complain, get them to pay for fixing it!
they should as they have told me that it will last its life and its not part of the service schedual!

what year and mileage is your car?

the chain setup on older engines was a poor one and that triggered the field remedy..... good luck arguing that as they are about to end the rework program on that.... I chose to pay to replace my chain as GM were not budging as my engine number was in the rework list but the chassis number wasnt.

most chains in astra/vectras tend to make noise/snap at 41K miles as its just after the 40K service and with the insane intervals it alows the oil jet to block.

I got a new chain kit from AV for about £100 and it took me a day to change (this was a slow day with lots of breaks on a car with less space/access than an astra)

If it sounds like a diesel at idle the chain is well funked. If it "slaps" at about 1500rpm -2500rpm then the tensioner is maxed out (but the whoe lot needs changing). If it ticks like a gooun on cold starts and cold days then its likely that the exhaust manifold is cracked (again common problem)
