half tank or full tank of petrol?

how much petrol do you fill your tank with and does it affect MPG?

my thinking has allways been if you only have 1/2 tank of petrol the is less weight and so it uses less?

is there any fact to this? or does it not matter how much petrol is in ur tank?

Well, I usually just fill mine up to the gunnels and burn it right down to near fumes before I fill it again.

I noticed today when the petrol light was flashing at me because the tank was pretty dry that the car feels a bit faster when you give it boots off the mark. I'm assuming it might have a bit of an effect on your MPG (not much though) if you have a full tank instead of a half or less.

Personally I just prefer filling it up because it means less trips to the petrol station.

Can't be bothered with going to the petrol station and shoving in 1/2 a tank or a tenner as my mum used to do. Fill it to the rafters and run it right down. But when low my 1.6 really strugles to get power. Not a problem with weight it feels lathargic. Once full it feels faster even though I'm heavier? The missus complains her corsa steering goes heavy when low on fuel.

i pressed the wrong thing on the poll.

i fill my tank to the top...

i like to spend as little time at petrol stations as possible, so fill it to the brim and it lasts me a few weeks.

Interesting Q, and after some sums....

Petrol weighs about 750g (.75kg) per litre, so ½ a tank (26 litres) would weigh a tad over 19kg. so on an average journey a full tank would always weigh that much more than ½ a tank assuming the fuel usage is the same

Hardly worth bothering about & IMO you'd get better fuel economy but removing the mirrors and taping over all the panel gaps
