Paying over the odds for a 1.8 sxi?

Hi there as I introduced myself yesterday im 19, I was looking at getting a 2.0sri on X plate but after many insurance quotes etc its guna work out to expensive after tax , insurance and petrol etc etc.

Im currently looking at a 1.8 SXi 03 plate astra in black , 57k miles no mods to it whatsoever full service history etc in immaculate condition. Its from a garage and will be getting it on HPi thats IF I get it , but the price is £4600. Understandably I know I can pick up 00-02 plates for £3,500 - £4,000 but do you think that £4,600 is a little steep? I already have the Irmy exhaust ready to fit and I should be able to pick up other bits fairly cheaply (splitter , spoiler and skirts etc)

    Cheers.

Seems a bit steep for an '03. I paid £6800 for my '03 SXI DTi over 2 years ago, and the diesels tend to be a little dearer than the petrols. But mine's a 5-door which tend to be a little cheaper here than the 3-doors.

Seems like a reasonable enough price, obviously you'll get cheaper if you buy privately but that's always the case. As long as the car is totally mint then go for it I say

Cheers for the advice just rang up and the bugger was sold :P , found 2 others though 1.6sxi's in both 03 plate in blue and another in silver for £3450 each both on 58k miles , Im thinking the blue would probably look nicer modded up than the silver but thats just personal preference, going to look at both today and tommorow and hopefully snap one up

There is a big difference, performance wise, between the 1.8/2.0 and the 1.6..

That said, the 1.6 is still pretty pokey and would be cheaper on petrol, tax and insurance!!

Haha, don't rip the 1.6! They're pretty fast, at least as far as I'm concerned with my own one!

Since you're 19 (same age as me) then I know all too well just how much insurance can rape you for anything bigger than a 1.8 so good call on sacking the 2 litre idea. I was advised when I was looking for astras to go for the 1.8 because supposedly it's a better car, but I went and bought the 1.6 purely because it was a good price and in good condition. I'm really happy with it, and trust me it's a pretty nippy car!
Watch who's comin' at you! Why? Who's got the power?

Provided its coming having been serviced (check on timing belt as it due), years mot and a years warranty then thats a decent price. If you have no trade in the try to get it knocked down a bit and ask for road tax.
