How to tint your silver head lamps

Sorry if this is in the wrong place.

Due to bordom and my love of DIY I took it upon myself to tint the silver headlamps that used to be fitted to my coupe:

It's very easy to do and will cost you less than £10 (much cheaper than buying the tinted head lamps) and take about 4 hours (most of which is paint drying time.

    The outcome looks like this:

1 ) Put your oven on at 100 deg C
2 ) Remove all the fittings from the headlamps -inc the rubber strip from the outside
3 ) Place the headlamp in the oven for 5 mins
4 ) Use a blunt knife and ease the clear lens from the headlamps, undoing the clips as you go
5 ) Use the knife to cut thorugh any of the black sealent so it does not string everywhere, but do not remove the sealent.
6 ) Take the lens off and the silver surround out.
7 ) Use fine wet and dry and sand the silver surround (so the paint sticks to it)
8 ) A coupe of coats of grey primer and 3 coats of satin or gloss black should be enough

Once dry you can reassemble the light
1 ) Place the black surround on to the light (not the lens) there are places for the clips/legs to go.
2 ) Place the lens on the front of the light as far as you can (it won't go back completly as there is sealent in the way.
3 ) Place in the oven as you did to remove the lens
4 ) After 5 mins take it out push the lens on and click in the clips.

Note: when the light comes out of the oven it is hot to touch!

There done......it's very easy, just make sure the sealent does not go any anywhere that it shouldn't.

Sorry I did not take any pics during the process, but if you follow the instructions you'll be fine.
Tell me what you've done, not what you're going to!

excellent work mate, you can do mine next if you like? I'll head on over to North Walsham sometime tomorrow night

so how dark are they in comparison to the genuine tinted one's? you've not tinted the lense I see... this on the agenda for the next DIY/boredom experiment?

The lens on the O/E tinted lamps is clear, it's only the surround that's black rather than silver therefore they are the same.

No more DIY for the time being.

It's so easy to do, seriously you must try it one saturday when you don't need the car. The secret is not to remove the sealent, and th reassemble the lights and put them into the oven to melt the sealent and refit them.

hmm I think I'll be going shopping for a spare headlight or two... got a few colours to try out as well, thinking maybe white would stand out a bit too or I could use the unused cans of "Gris Flandres" from my old 206 that's as rare as rocking horse poop...

    Hi,

    Thanks for the how-to.

So when you reassemble it, how do you make sure the sealant seals it properly?
I badly want to do it to the missus' Agila.

    Thanks.
