Unhappy Astra AC Compressor problem HELP!!!

    Hi,

I bought my Astra (2001, 1.6, 16V) about a month back from a Trader. The car has done about 35K. The car is running smoothly without any issues except for the AC. It just does not seem to work. I got it checked at the Quickfit and was told that the gas was just 400 mg as against 700 mg. Got it filled up. There were no leaks in the system. Yet it does nto seem to work. I got it checked again at Vauxhall Dealer and he says that the Compressor has blown off. He's given me a quote of £492 (300£ + VAT + Labour) .
    1) Is this price for compressor OK?
    2) I spoke to the Trader and he says AC is not covered under Warrenty and hence he wont pay . I keep telling him the AC was not working when i took the car from him. How do i get the money out of this Trader?

    Can anybody help me here?

the trader is responsible for the repairs. the whole car is coverd under warranty not just the bits he feels like! i used to work as an ac tech and never heard of an ac pump blowing off,the pump may have seased and is therefore useless.you should ask just what blowing of means, could be ive just never heard that term! i trust vauxhall checked the pressure switch too?

Unfortunately, the trader may blame Kwik-fit as there are a few other Astra Owners on the Site who have had problems with their A/C after taking it there to have the Air-con re-gassed. Dont take it there.

Do a search on here for air-con, and if you live near a refrigeration specialist, a few others on here say that is a good place to take a faulty Compressor to - even for a second opinion.

Oh and welcome to the site - get some pics up of your car!

The Vauxhall Dealer told me that the Compressor is not working and its not swtiching when the AC button is pressed. Also he says the engine RPM is not moving when the AC button is pushed. Is the compressor also called a AC Pump? i am not aware of this. I am trying hard to get the repair amount from the Trader. But he is just not ready to pay anything. Is there a legal system where i can lodge a complaint on this Trader and get him to pay for the repair? Also as a AC mechanic, is the price mentioned right for the pump replacement?
