lightning strike on one of our planes...

One of our twins limped back in the other day after having had a lightning strike...

strike entered here by the GPU port:

and exited via one of the winglets, totally crispy ducking it:

It wasn't me flying thankfully, but I gather the experience was rather loud and.... interesting! I had actually just gone over a bit for one of my theory subjects about lightning strikes on composite airframes, and how it can cause structural damage and temporarilly deafen/flash blind the crew... funny timing.

Ironic where it entered... the external power connection sticker seems a touch inadequate at 28v...

Ouch! did it mess with the plane in any other way? Glad it was only an accident and not a disaster and that everyone walked/flew away.

Shit!! That must have been an adventure! How come the wing's bent? Is that what the lightning did, I can't work out if it's meant to be as bent as that from the plane in the background? Are they the same type of plane?

Nah its a winglet, it meant to be bent, but not crispy ducked. Is the fried winglet all loose now, like you can rub it, and it will discintergrate?.

Yeah jace, as above it's a winglet (fancy aerodynamic widget which reduces drag by reducing vortices) so it's meant to be bent up like that. The aircraft in the background is indeed the same type.

Nobbie - it delaminated from the strike, totally fubar-ed!
