    mk4 1.6 sxi - what engine code?

Hi, ive a mk4 astra 1.6 sxi as my daily driver, and a tuned c16xe concours nova weekend car.

Think ill do the timing belt/tensioner and rollers on the astra as they were last done 40k miles ago.

What model of engine do i have, is it the X16xel? Wheres the easiest place to locate this, as the stamp on the block is well hidden on the mk4 under the plastic cover etc

if its not there, its stamped on the block on the front next to the bell housing, its kinda hard to descripe where it is, its on the sloping part of the block/bell housing at the front.

    what year is it?

    X16XEL upto 2001
    Z16XE from 2001

Z16XEP - Twinport version - start date unknown

Easy way to tell.... lift the bonnet and look at the exhaust manifold.
If its the usual 4 branch cast manifold going down to a flange leading to the front pipe with CAT underslung its the X16XEL....if the manifold has a round cylinder (CAT) on it with a plain front pipe - then its the latter Z16XE

Twinport models are virtually identical to the std Z16XE but these would be badged Twinport and fairly sure not relevant in this case.
