Sort this out for once and for all! Petrol or Diesel??

I know that you can get more speed outa petrol car.
I was told that a petrol car is cheaper than a diesel car.
I was told that a diesel car, you will get more miles outa the tank.
    Is the above correct?
(yeah, i am blonde, and i dont really know much about engines)

So if i had a 1.7 3 door hatchback SRI and had a 1.6 3 door SRI hatchback would there much difference in in fuel usage?
Which one would you go for, petrol or diesel and why??

Petrol for one reason and 1 reason only..

When I am behind a diesel that tries to give it some welly and I get covered in black smoke.. I laugh.... Could not do with the thought of people laughting at me in my car..

Stupid reason I know but there... I would rather drive a petrol mini than say a diesel ferrari..

Some of the best engines coming out these days are diesel. The choice completely depends on what you want it for, it;s not a case of beiong better or worse. It better or worse at "blah blah blah"

If you travel long distance and want good MPG and low running costs, then get a diesel
If you want more power and performance, then get a petrol.

    i have had both a 1.9cdti an a z20let
the vectra was good on a run but i get just a few less mpg on the zaffy on my way to work

a mates dad has a Bmw 335D an that thing shifts an still dose 30+mpg

diesel is good if you do a lot of miles but so is LPG also my vectra cost more to service then zaffy

seems to be a lot of fuss/respect for things like the 888 cdti, bmw's 35 series twin turbo diesels etc etc

Ive always had petrols, last one was an Astra Coupe 2.2 16v and have now switched to a 1.9 CDTI SRi 150, appart from the noise i love it and goes very well. Also the 1.9 CDTi can be mapped to 200 BHP so its never gonna be a slow diesel
