Just serviced, but what have they forgotten?

    Hi all,

I've just had the 80K service done on my coupe turbo, but the garage hasnt checked the cam belt, which concerns me as I'm wondering what else they might have missed!

    They did:
    Oil 5-30 fully synthetic
    oil filter
    air filter
    fuel filter
    spark plugs BKR 5EK
    sump plug

The cars service history indicates the "Toothed belt & Tensioning Roller" was done at the last service which was at 60K miles. Is this the cam belt? The service book indicates this should be done every 40K miles.

The service book says the "Ribbed belt and tensioner" should be checked every 20K miles. It just says check, not change. Is this just the fan belt then? So I only need to change it when it looks worn? Seems a bit weird.

The schedule says nothing about when the gearbox fluid should be changed, so I don't know if I should get that done too.

They didn't change the pollen filter. Is this easy to do myself?

I'm going to have to take it back anyway as since the service it's developed its first problem in the 10 or so months I've owned it.

Whilst at idle the engine has frequent little hiccups where the revs drop slightly just for an instant and the car gives a small shudder. Anyone know what they may have done to cause this?

    Cheers,
    Alex

Toothed belt & Tensioning Roller is the cam belt

Ribbed belt and tensioner is the alternator/aircon belt
The truth is always the truth even if you haven't realised it yet...

I think the problem is the spark plugs they have put in! I too had this problem with these plugs and once i replaced them with genuine vaux plugs the fault went away

pollen filter is easy to do, its behind the glove box and takes about twenty mins. running problen sounds like the plugs. the z20 let is prone to bad idle isuues with certain plugs. personally i dont like vauxhalls 5 30 oil as its too thin when hot and doesnt offer good protection for the turbo. also if the timing belt was last done 40k ago it needs doing again as its due every 40k. id also do the water pump as these are known to fail and can be very costly to fix. im assuming its a 20let you have???

    Hi all,

    Thanks for the replies.

Danny, here's a pic of my car on this thread:

I don't think Ive seen yours around. I wouldnt have remembered that reg!

I had the work done at an independant garage. The service book says the 'toothed belt' was done at 60K miles, which seems a bit odd as it wouldnt have needed doing at that time.

I'm going back to the garage tomorrow. I'll mention about the plugs.

you can never do your cam belt too often mate

that extra 20k miles might just have included the point where your cam belt may have snapped and trashed your engine

a lot of people (and garages) change cambelts at 60k intervals regardless of what the service book says, its just good practise
