    ask..:

    1. service history?
    2. mot'ed?
    3. any advisory's issued when mot'ed
    4. taxed?

    thats the 4 starters ones.

as for things to look for, well take a look at tyre tread, scratches and chips and dents. when he/she starts the engine listen for odd sounds, see if it has a stable idle speed. eg' doesnt go up then down then up then down etc...

test drive the car when cold and also when warm. and when doing so, keep windows closed, you will be able to hear any funny noise etc a lot better. there is a lot more things, but this should stop him/her thinking you dont know anything about cars.

look out for any electric problems: e.g.

    - indicator problems(sumtimes they freeze)
    - heater blowers (check if they work when you turn the knob)
    - windows
    - any type of central locking probs

    hope that helps

If you can afford it go for a later spec car i.e. 1.8 or 2.2

Nothing against the 2.0's as I have one, just older cars so depreciate more.

    Anyway,

    check the service,
    cam belt,
look at the left side manifold studs to see if any have sheared off,
check the manifold for cracks (sounds like a blown exhaust when cold)
Check the rear calipers if they have 3 or 4 ribs they are Bosch ones and are prone to seizing so worth haggling over,
check it has an Irmscher back box as all the 2.0 SRi's had them.
    Check the air-con works properly
If it had cruise control check works
If it has a sun roof check the seals and it is operational
Check the fog lights for cracks and water
Check the condition of the centre section and CAT
MAKE SURE the loking wheel nut key is there and it is for the car
Check condition of rear wiper as the spoiler needs to come off to replace it
Check the spoiler and its mounting posts for damage
Check for panel damage and paint colour mismatch
Check the seats recline forward OK and the cable is not too loose if 3-door
Check brake discs for uneven wear (especuially on inner surface)
If its kit Irmsher Kit check its fitment and also for damage on the underside of the front skirt and no missing jacking or tow covers
Check for any warnign lights on the dash e.g. the engine management light.
    Check it idles OK
Check the cooling fan comes on after a period of time running
Check oil condition and water condition
If you can jack it up check for play in the bearings
