    gear knob question

please don't tell me to search - I have done and its all sketchy.

I know how to change the gearknob, i.e. cut rubber/cut bit underneath/fit new one etc...

I just want to know the best way to cut the piece under the rubber. I notice some cars this is plastic, but mines metal so is it best to cut down the centre from the top, or cut across the stem?

    any help appreciated as usual

The query I have really is Step 3 in the how-to. It says that although certain models the piece is soft alu alloy, but to cut the same, which is fine in principle... apart from the fact it doesn't say how to cut in the first place!

I've started to cut from the top, but am concerned if I go too far it will ruin the spring that controls the lift up reverse, whereas if I cut across it then I run the risk of cutting too far and damaging the stem

So which way have people cut it if they have the metal part rather than plastic? and how far to cut it...

I cut mine like a steak keep taking out slices from one side. The actual gear stick has a plastic cover on it in black. So I kept slicing till I saw that then sliced around it. It will all become clear.

Basically its only a stick the gear nob is on top of. Just mind lift up reverse collar if you have one?
