    not running right

    the missus has a 1.4 8v astra on a 94 l its done 53k when cold runs really lumpy and flat when she sets off its using loadsa water and its smoking quite a bit is it terminal

    From what you describe it sounds like headgasket, depends on the general condition of the car as to whether it's terminal or not, as it's the 8v engine it's not a horrendous job, if done through a garage expect to pay anywhere between £300 - £500 roughly depending on the condition of the cylinder head

    it may be a good idea to check for oil in the water header tank, and see if there is any white gunk stuff if you remove the oil filler cap, they may give you signs whether it is the head gasket or not.

    i used to have the 1.6 8v model which is lmost the same engine as the 1.4 8v.
    When my head gasket went it done exactly what you have described.

    Its an easy job for most mechanics as the engines very simple so shop around for prices. I ended up paying £80 for labour, £40 for parts and i think it was £30-£50 to get the head skimmed. I had a bit extra taken off the head to up the compression though so it might not cost so much for you.

    cheers guys it is the head gasket been quoted 140 quid all in which is good enough that includes timing belt head skimmed parts and labour
