Been told my Diesel pump is ****ed, Y20dtl.

Ok so i brake down on the motorway, (EML comes on and the engine instantly cuts out and hasnt started yet since).

Tow it to a garage and they say the Diesel pump has gone and its a £900 job to fix. Would the pump just suddenly stop working like that?

And is it a better option to swap the engine for something else and what is the cheapest and best option?

    Thanks for your help!

The only real way to see if it is the pump at fault is to get Tech2 plugged in and it will show the fault. Best to get a recon pump... possibility of it being cheaper.

About the engine swap, engines sometimes come without turbos.. pumps etc. So double check before you buy..

    Hope that helps.

Why not try and get one from a scrappie. Probably the cheapest way but you pay your money you take your chance.

wow thanks for the help guys! The place i took it to has all the diagnostic gear but would like a second opinion really.

I have seen ads on ebay that recon your pump for £260 i think, that sounds pretty good?

So you think my best bet is to get my pump reconned or get a replacment. Ebay has got to be my best bet, do you think?

    Thanks ALOT!

Ebay no come backs. Becareful to read their returns policy with a fine tooth coombe. Why not look in the yellow pages for a diesel specialist in your area and see what they say.

Yeah i suppose thats a good idea, this place i took it to is supoposed to be a Vaux specialist. They say it has to be off an astra, has to have matching numbers and has to be off an x20dtl (my engine), is this true?

    Thanks!

You need the pump that matches your engine.

Well they specifically mention the VP44, which is what the pump pretty much is on the Di/DTi engines. Rover's L-series is the other common engine in the UK that uses the pump.
