    TwinPort
Updated version introduced in 2002, with lighter cast-iron cylinder block and camshaft driven by toothed belt. Features EGR valve and TwinPort variable intake geometry - twin intake ports with a choke closing one of the ports at low RPM, providing strong air swirl pattern for higher torque levels and better fuel economy. The drive belt for the camshafts is wider and stronger than before, and water pump is not driven by it anymore which improves reliability.

Older engine with 4 valves per cylinder have the inlet and exhaust ports siamesed together for each cylinder.

On a twinport engine, the inlet valves have separate ports and intake flaps which close off one of the ports at part throttle. By having different camshaft profiles for the two ports, emissions and economy can be optimised at part throttle without compromising power or torque at full throttle.

Ive ALWAYS wanted to know that as my mum has a Corsa 1.2 Twinport and always thought 'big deal' twin ports', but now I see there is much more to it than that. It sounds a very good idea too!

I remember there was a Beetle 1600 Twinport from the 70's, so the name has been used before!

The Beetle Twinport would have had two ports per bank to give one port per cylinder, the earlier ones having siamesed inlet ports, like the BMC A-series, which is bad for airflow.
