Lightbulb Help us make the definitive guide on what to look for when buying an astra mk4...

As title really, there has been a massive increase in posts recently regards what to look for when buying an astra mk4. So I thought between us all we could get all the information together and then add this thread to the FAQ.

So please add any know problems, recalls, trouble areas, tell tail signs etc etc. It can be model specific, engine specific or just engine specific.

    Thanks all

    ok - mk4 turbo:

AFM - regularly go - wise to keep a spare

Water pump - if an early (2001-2003) then was it changed? good warranty claim if you still have warranty left - as it includes the cambelt and rollers. Worth doing every cambelt change from then on.

Turbo - on higher mileage cars can be an issue - anything 50k+ - check for white or blue smoke under hard acceleration. Small amount of oil in the ic piping is normal. Excessive amounts can be a prelude to turbo failure.

Cambelt - 40,000 miles is the recommended change.

Brake discs - need replacing every 50k.

2.2 - Oil spray on timing chain - check that this has been done on recall. Early models suffered failure of the timing chain due to the spray nozzle being too small.

Oil changes - (all models especially turbo) check the history - there are plenty of examples about - oil changes every 5k is a good sign that the car has been cared for.

Leather interior - check drivers bolster side support - this is prone to wear.

All engines - check plugs - can tell you a multitude of things about the engine condition.

888 - check Alcantara seat condition, as above turbo issues, condition of OZ alloy wheels, fibre glass bodykit - any cracks? - check front bumper to wheel arch alignment.

All models - any lights on the dash - such as TC/ABS - Air bag, engine management etc - sensor replacements can be expensive.

will add more as i think of them.

    1.6 16v engine.

Intermittent operation of the ABS light usually means the front left ABS sensor is faulty. Bad news is it's only available as a complete hub assembly from Vauxhall.

Known to use oil. Apparently up to 1litre/1000 miles is acceptable.

On these engines the cambelt change is recommended every 40k, best to change the idler pulley as well.

Bosch rear calipers are a known fault. easy sorted under warranty though.

Apparently, the rear suspension has issues with quick wearing bearings or something too. Could just be a rumour?

Rear suspension spring failure seems to come up occasionally. Seems just the last coil breaks off.

Not happened to myself but have heard a few stories.

Oh and one more thing check that the glovebox has both arms intact. Probably happens when they get dropped open shearing off an arm, usually the one that operates the glovebox light switch.

Should really get this fixed as i've had the car 18 months now .
