    Suicidal Chaffinches ! ! !

    Righty peeps and ornithologists .....

We have a chaffinch attacking our house windows daily.
Literally flying into the glass repeatedly.

I understand it's seeing it's reflection and thinks it's another chavfinch
... and being teritorial it's going for it.

    What can I do ?
(apart from paint the windows with mud)

    cheers

put a mirror up on a tree in the garden, so it attacks that instead.

    This is a common problem.

You could either a) Put newspaper on the inside of the windows, this makes their reflection less clear to them or

    b) find a big picture of a bird of prey or crow and put that in the window for a bit.

    Hope this helps!

It's actually because they can see a reflection of the sky and garden in the window, and think it's just somewhere else to go. double glazing helps makes the reflection stronger

    according to the RSPB...

"This hazard can be reduced by making the window pane more obvious to the bird. Fixing to the outside of the glass an object which will indicate that an obstacle is present should help. Any image will work try cutting out random shapes such as half moons, stars etc from coloured self-adhesive plastic.

The most effective shape is likely to be that of a hawk. Self-adhesive bird silhouettes (both songbirds and birds of prey) can be purchased from any RSPB shop, many good petshops and garden centres, or by mail order from many large birdfood companies."

    other remedies include...

Go outside and assess the "bird's-eye view" of windows. Look at anything that would give birds the impression that there is no barrier at the window glass.

Hang plants, streamers, wind chimes, or other objects outside the window.

Move feeders away from large picture windows.

Put a barrier of garden netting outside the window. This is most effective if firmly mounted about a foot away from the glass.

or just stand there naked all day

Jeeeez if I did all that my house would look like a playschool !!!
It's attacking all windows front and back !!

I'll maybe just have to wait for it to get some female chavfinch up the duff so it can concentrate on her !

Don't they do this on armoured cars to protect from rocket attack?

i would say a few hanging baskets like ffoeg sugested would be a good way of trying to deter them without turning your house into a bit of a joke
