    Question Help on a mk3 please !

I just bought my wife a Vx Astra Mk3 1.6 16v. 12 years old and runs like a dream. Great bodywork and clean interior, 37k miles from new with only 1 owner!

Anyway to the point, we were out on a driving lesson and she drove the car great. We got home and I noticed that the car was running alittle hot. The temp gauge was reading 100 degrees and the fan was running. Outside temp was approx 17 degrees.

I thought it was alittle odd but I wanted to ask you guys in the know if this is normal for that engine or should I be looking into doing some fault finding.

Some background info: just been MOT'd before purchase. Serviced last month (according to the trader but you never can tell).

I'm thinking of flushing the water system or maybe changing the thermostat.

Any advise / guidance would be greatly recevied.

Cheers and great looking site btw. I havent logged in for months!!!!!

Cheers for the advise guys. Gonna take the car out for a run now and see how she goes. If it still looks wrong I know what I will be doing Saturday!

Does anyone know what the most common faults on this model is? Just curious...

iv had 2 of that model astra and they both ran hot. averages around 90 - 95 on the move but when standstill it runs to 100 and then the fan kicks in.

never caused me any problems and iv owned one for 3 years now.

Yes these do run quite hot normally and it may not be a problem, you know the cooling fan works as you said it cuts in which is good, your best bet is what you've said your going to do, drain and flush the cooling system and fit a new thermostat ( fit a genuine vx one )
Only thing to really look out for on these engines is when the cambelt and water pump was last chaged, should be 4 years or 40,00 miles

Many thanks for all your info. After another run last night I observed the same thing. Spoke to a neighbour who has the same model and he said hsi has always run hot.

Will do the thermostat just to be sure. Also, thanks for the info on the bushes. The nearside wheel creaks when turning right so I think a bush is going.
