    Have mostly been driving...

    ..... a 1999 VW Golf V5 2.3

Borrowed it from a mate the other day while my coupe was in rehab. Its an early one so only the 150bhp model but its quick and torquey. Nothing like the coupe (obviously) but still good to drive.

    Liked
    Heated leather seats
    Climate control electronic heater thingy
    Engine note (being a v5!)
    Leccy windows all round
Blue dash (must get this done to mine)

    Dis-liked
Handling was crap - very wallowy
Bolster-less seats - with them being leather you slide around a lot
    No cruise control
No steering wheel controls for the stereo
Climate control electronic heater thingy (could never get it just right )
    Fuel economy - £30 for 190 miles?!

Was initially planning buying it as I love the look of the mk4 golf but the dis-likes were far more outstanding than the likes.

Maybe the 170 bhp later version is a better car? Parkers say the 170 has better economy but I doubt I will find out.

Never driven one but the V5 never seemed to get a good write up, thirsty and not very quick although decent enough torque. It made even less sense witht the 1.8T 150bhp GTi which is obviously very tunable too.

Doesn't your old boy have a 4Motion? I've always fancied trying one of them after having the old VR6.

Yeah. I asked him for a shot but he said 'NO!!!'

Thats a different kettle of fish altogether, its quick, very torquey and grips like a 10 dollar whore!

No idea what the reasoning was behind the V5, it was about the same as a 2.2 astra (which is about the same as the 1.8T golf as standard) but the astra has more toys, better mpg and not as expensive.

Yeah, it was a bit of a flop really. Always wondered if it was like the 2.2 Astra and had plenty of untapped potential though.

Possibly. Its a big engine producing way too little power.

Maybe thats the point though - the same performance as the 1.8T but with durability in mind?

I would sooner have the 4motion or the 1.8T though. At least with 2.8 v6 and 4wd, 26mpg is worth it!
