    DVD burner problems

I have just tried to burn on a DVDR but my burner isnt seeing the disc.

I can however use it to burn CDR's

Any idea what the problem is?

Do they use 2 different lasers and the DVD one is/has died?

What software are you using? I know that in Nero you have to select what disc you are intending on using, CD or DVD?

Have you checked the manufacturers website for firmware upgrades? Firmware is the ECU for the drive which tells it how to setup the laser and recognise what disc is in the drive. Each disc is made up of an organic dye which you burn into but it must recognise the type of dye and setup the laser accordingly so that it doesn't just destroy the disc. Becareful of 3rd party firmware as they will invalidate your warranty and will more than likely wreck discs and possibly drive. Always download only from the manufacturers website.

If its stopped half way through the pack then what conditions are you storing the discs in? Because they are organic they can die. Discs must be kept out of direct sunlight and away from high and cold temperatures. It is known that the end of the dye run (that produce discs) the dye becomes very poor and in most cases unusable.

    For Win XP

    Go to your control panel
    Double click on system
    Click on the hardware tab
Click on the device manager button
Where it says DVD/CD Drive click on the square box with a plus inside and it will list the drive type and model number.

    Win 98
    Go to control panel
    Double click on system
    Click on device manager tab
Where it says DVD/CDRom click on the square box with a plus inside and it will list the drive type and model number.

It is possible that the DVD Laser has died.

lol ok first of all what type of burner is it? In Nero at the top of the Nero Burning Rom application will show what drive it's trying to write to.

Also, what are you trying to burn? If your trying to burn a BIN/CUE Image nero will only allow you to burn it to CD.

As someone else said, if you have selected a CD complation (sp) instead of a DVD complation then that could cause problems.

There are two types of DYES as well, it was known for some of the old NEC DVD writers that it would not accept a Rytek or Ritek dye unless you updated the firmware.
