    Mk 4 Astra GSI - Do's and Don'ts?

    Greetings All,

This is my 1st post so sorry if its lame but I need your help!
I recently saw the light and ditched my S2 Rs Turbo in a bid to move on to greater glory....namely the Astra GSI.

Sticking to what I knew, turbo power seemed the best way forward hence the Mk4 but ive now come unstuck! where to begin???

When looking at the GSI - is there anything that I should be looking out for?? obviously FVSH is good and the lower the miles the better but do GSI's go wrong??

Also, is it better to go for a modded GSI or standard?? What BHP do the standard components start not copeing with the power, ie clutch and brakes??

Im looking to get a GSI in these next few weeks so i'd really like your advice so i dont get stuck with a pig in a poke!

    Firstly Hello and Welcome!

Check all the Basics such as the Belts/Water Pump etc were changed at 40k

    Service History

Could even ring Vaux to see if Any Recall Work has been carried out on the vehicle (If there has been any)

Not sure on much else mate as i dont own a Turbo

    ALSO

Water pump - if an early (2001-2003) then was it changed? good warranty claim if you still have warranty left - as it includes the cambelt and rollers. Worth doing every cambelt change from then on.

Turbo - on higher mileage cars can be an issue - anything 50k+ - check for white or blue smoke under hard acceleration. Small amount of oil in the ic piping is normal. Excessive amounts can be a prelude to turbo failure.

Cambelt - 40,000 miles is the recommended change.

Brake discs - need replacing every 50k.

Oil changes - (all models especially turbo) check the history - there are plenty of examples about - oil changes every 5k is a good sign that the car has been cared for.

Leather interior - check drivers bolster side support - this is prone to wear.

All engines - check plugs - can tell you a multitude of things about the engine condition.

All models - any lights on the dash - such as TC/ABS - Air bag, engine management etc - sensor replacements can be expensive.
    Hope That Helps

depends on how far you want to go with it buddy

phase 1 on most software with an exhaust sees between 230-245bhp

phase 2 you need new intercoolers and a few other bits but get more hoses

you can go all the way up to phase 4 now i think

best start with de-restricting the air box, fitting a panel filter and do a pre-cat removal on it

then a miltek of blueflame with a phase 1 map and you should see easy over 230bhp

so where you from ? and welcome

As for Modifying Regal Offer a Load of Tuning Packages

    Phases 1 through to 6 () although Phase 3 has a .5 so theres really 7 Phases

    Check out

    Edit:
Also it might be worth Taking into Consederation a Coupe Turbo as they are the same engine/Componants etc but are more readily avaliable and a bit cheaper!

Shaun - Cheers for the welcome! I think the GSI is a good choice, modded or not you can always go further! Its safe to go with Std as youre not protentually dealing with someone elses mistakes!

Dave - Coupe is something I could be persuaded to look at but it will have to be in Arden blue ... these are quiet rare but there's one on Autotrader that has taken my fancy!
PS - dont worry one day you'll get a turbo...if you good! LOL
